Band 7 IELTS Agree Disagree Essay (4) : Success and money

Many people judge success solely by money and material possessions. However, success can be achieved or measured in other ways. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

If a person is wealthy, perhaps owning a luxury car, living in a nice house and generally enjoying a high standard of living, then many people would say this person is successful. This may indeed be true. However, as far as I am concerned, there are certainly numerous other ways in which success can be achieved or measured.

First of all, in terms of education, passing examinations or completing a course can be considered as marks of success. For example, every year in Vietnam, many students take the University Entrance Examination. This is one of the greatest turning points in life for those young people. If a student can get a high score, they can apply to do a degree at university, and this is recognized as an academic success. Moreover, a student’s performance in an examination, is a useful barometer for employers and others to assess the student’s achievement and ability.

I also reckon that success can be achieved in personal life such as with raising and supporting a family, regardless of wealth. Children raised in poor families can grow into responsible and successful adults because they got accustomed to hardship from an early age. Those children often have to learn to be independent from an early age by taking care of themselves and working to support their families. The living environment for poor children is quite challenging. Nevertheless, it teaches them helpful lessons about social values and human behavior. Those children may make mistakes and suffer failure repeatedly, which makes them mature rapidly. Conversely, those who are pampered or even spoiled in their childhood by their rich parents may well grow up to be lazy and incapable of being independent.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that in today’s society, people often regard success purely in terms of wealth. However, there are other ways of achieving success, including academic performance and the ability to raise children into mature and independent adults.
