Best strategy for True / False / Not Given IELTS reading questions

      Yes/No/Not Given and True/False/Not Given

This question which confuses many candidates for either versions of IELTS test ( General and Academic ).

• First of all , YES /NO / NOT GIVEN questions used in texts discussing factual information , while TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEM used where writer opinions are on question.

• The strategy remains the same for both types of questions :

Simply , if the statement is mentioned CLEARLY  in the paragraph , even using identical or most probably synonyms ,  so it is TRUE or YES .

But if the opposite or a different sense is indicated in the paragraph , so it is obviously FALSE ,/ NO .

And in case it is not mentioned at all , NOT GIVEN would be the only reasonable choice then.

Important Tips :

1 – Don’t deduce or try to use logical sense , it is NOT GIVEN if not stated in the text.

For example , if the text states that India is the second most populous country in the world , and the question asks if China is the most populous one , despite being right but considered as NOT GIVEN if not stated .

2- Questions follow the same order of sentences in the text , so of you are looking for the answer of the second question , check the text lies between the first and third answers.
Yes/No/Not Given vs. True/False/Not Given*

3 – It is ok to write the first letter of each answer in the answer sheet but , I do NOT  recommend that at all because sometimes it would be tough for examiners to differentiate between T and F , so WRITE THE FULL WORD : TRUE OR FALSE OR NOT GOVEN. to avoid losing marks.

Examples :

1 – Text :

         Most Canadians like Ice hockey.

Question :

Only few Canadians like Ice hockey.

The answer is False , since most and few contradict each other.

2 – Text :

It has been calculated that 17 percent of cases of lung cancer can be attributed to high levels of exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke during childhood and adolescence.

       Question :

Teenagers whose parents smoke are at risk of getting lung cancer at some time during their lives

         Answer :

Because teenagers and adolescents are synonymous words , the answer would be : TRUE or YES.

3 – Text :

Smoking is believed to be responsible for 30 % of all deaths from cancer.

       Question :

30 % of deaths in the United States are caused by smoking-related diseases.

       Answer   :

As there is a contradiction between death’s cause in the text and question. It’s due to Cancer in the text , while general in the question , so , the answer will be definitely NO or FALSE.
